Podcast Purview is a column highlighting the month’s best podcasts on writing (or whatever I can get to that strikes me that month). There will be interviews with podcast hosts about their shows and instructional posts on podcast production. As an avid podcast fan, my desire for this column is to point you to some of the best lessons or interviews I’ve heard, including if they have giveaways. I’ll post twice a month, on the second and fourth weeks to separate the posts between podcasts published in the first and second halves of each month.

Starting off, Adventures in Sci-Fi Publishing episode 136 with Bryan Thomas Schmidt was tremendous because of the instant chemistry he brought as an interviewee. I’d say, top guest of this round of shows – especially since it was his first time on a podcast. It was also just a well-rounded interview, ranging from discussing space opera, to how to include religion without offense, why he choose one publisher out of the four interested, his influence from Timothy Zahn and Star Wars, and enough about Bryan’s personal life that you root for his success.

“The Hunger Games Trilogy,” by Suzanne Collins is YA Science Fiction set in Panem, which is future North America. The main character, Katniss, volunteers to take her younger sister’s place in the brutal Hunger Games run by the cruel Capital government and its even more sadistic dictator, President Snow. This trilogy is about bravery and doing what is right even when it is not your first instinct. It deals with themes of loss, trust, revenge, and friendship. Throw in a little confusion in the romance department and you have The Hunger Games.

Show Notes:
Bryan Thomas Schmidt, author of THE WORKER PRINCE and creator of the Twitter #SFFWRTCHT weekly interview series, which has featured an impressive list of guests, joins us to discuss religion in science fiction, working with a new publisher, writing good characters, his love of Star Wars, starting books off with an emotional punch, and much more. Read the untwittered transcripts at Grasping for the Wind. Once THE WORKER PRINCE is available for order, which should be any day now, we’ll post it here. In the meantime, here is another of Bryan’s works:

Cesya MaRae Cuono hails from a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. She is a graduate of Alvernia University where she majored in Business Administration and also received her certificate of Multi-Media & Production makeup from Cosmix School of Makeup Artistry. You can find any updates from Cesya on her website at www.cesyacuonobooks.blogspot.com, as @cherrybomb_xox at Twitter or on Facebook.

SFFWRTCHT: Where did your interest in YA Fantasy come from?

Cesya MaRae Cuono: I guess from watching a lot of fantasy movies and TV shows when I was younger. I used to love “So Weird” on The Disney Channel and my dad is a huge Star Wars fan.

SFFWRTCHT: Who were some of the authors and books which influenced you growing up?

CMC: Oh gosh. The first series I ever read was the Replica series. I stopped after book 11 because the bookstore near me stopped stocking the books. I finally found all 24 books in the series along with the companion trilogy. It’s my personal goal to finish the series.

SFFWRTCHT: When did you decide to become a writer and how many books and stories have you written?

CMC: I only started writing in November 2010. And the only story I’ve written thus far is my current novel.

SFFWRTCHT: Where does Elemental Reality fall in that?
