Well, I do independent editing and I charge $30/hour. That’s fairly standard. But rates do vary. Some who are more experienced charge a lot more. I’d say you search online for them, ask fellow writers, etc. That’s how people find me and that’s how I find editors when I need one as a writer.

Awesome post. Now the only questions I have left are; Where do you actually find freelance editors, and how much is their usual rate? (Mine does about $10 per page, and she’s pretty good, and quick if you tell her to be )

I really enjoyed this post – thank you. What a great reminder that as writers we can easily write what is obvious and still have a good story, but add those layers of nuances and subtext and it takes the writing to a new level.

Loved both the video and the instruction. Way to give us a memorable lesson! Adding nuances can make a scene—a book!—so much more meaningful, but they do need to be subtly done. Hurrah for practice!

That’s an awesome video in an of itself, but also a vivid example of how to throw in something unexpected that isn’t there for the sake of being unexpected. It’s meaningful. I’m not sure if I have much of that in my stories yet, but I will certainly keep it in mind.

One thing I caught out of this sequence is the change in the way the two of them danced. At first, they barely moved around the dance floor, their dance had little life to it. After the centre wow, their dance came alive. It went from something ho-hum routine, to having passion for the moment. I’ve seen both kinds of dance, but this piece helps show why they differ.
